Conntails, or strips of banded color which are popular with the scene look, is very easy to do, and here is a step by step guide to get the perfect scene coontails.
First of all, section the hair, with the strips that you want to dye out and the rest of the hair pinned back. It is easier to dye one section at a time, but if you have help from someone else, they can all be done at the same time. If your hair is curly and you want the perfect scene coontails, straighten the hair first. Use scotch tape or another similar item to section the strips of hair in to bands, the parts that you are dying left without the tape, and the bits that you don’t want, taped off. Make sure they are even and wrapped properly to ensure no leakage of the dye on to the banded sections.

Prepare the dye as per the instructions on the packet, some hair dyes will require you to place it on wet hair, while others will need dry hair, so you need to make sure of this before you start. Put Vaseline or another similar substance around the hairline and ears etc. to make sure you do not get dye on your face. Apply the dye to the sections that require it and then leave it for the designated amount of time, before you wash it off, again, following the instructions on the packet.
