Cruise, Day 3

Today we will be docking at Key West early in the morning, which I'm even more excited for than the Bahamas. My friends have told me that I will love the island surrounded by pretty beaches and colorful storefronts and streets filled with fun bars, and, based on Coastal Living's picturesque slideshow that I have clicked through more times than I would admit, I believe them.

I brought along Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms to read for class, and I am desperately hoping I'll be able to convince a few friends to tour his home on the island with me. After reading A Moveable Feast last year, Hemingway joined the ranks of longtime favorites like Salinger and Fitzgerald on my overflowing bookshelf and I would love nothing more than to see his home--especially after seeing dress designer Samantha Pleet write about her visit earlier this month.

Cruise, Day 2

My cruise ship will share very few characteristics with sailboats, but I love a good nautical theme and just couldn't resist the stripes-and-boats combination for my first full day on board.

I undoubtedly got way too sunburt yesterday, so I'll be applying sunscreen every hour on the hour. Hopefully I'll be putting in serious pooltime at one of the three pools on board, and don't you think it would be a shame if I didn't take advantage of the water slides a few times? (I might have to rethink this strapless bikini, though).

Cruise, Day 1

Alongside fifteen of my friends, I will be hopping on the boat in the early afternoon after 16 hours of traveling from Missouri to Florida. Aren't road trips grand? Even though I've taken fewer than five pictures during all of college, I am vowing to document this trip from start to finish and I'll be sure to write all about it as soon as I'm back.

Assuming the sun is shining in lovely Jacksonville, I'll be sunning myself with the help of this month's Elle and the biggest bottle of spf 50 sunscreen I can get my hands on (which, to my good fortune, turned out to be the children's kind that smells like babies and beaches).

A sixteen hour road trip calls for the comfiest clothes that can be found in a closet. In my case, it's this two-sizes-too-big striped sweatshirt, oversized bright blue T-shirt, cut-off jeans shorts, and moccasins, which are one the closest thing to slippers I can get away with.

It took serious willpower not to pack every navy nautical stripe in my closet, since I'm going to be on a boat for five days and nothing says "seasoned boater" quite like navy stripes. I justified this one because it's a sweatshirt that can keep me warm in a drafty hotel room, aboard the boat, or on the return trip to chilly Missouri.

Plus, it makes me feel like a sailor. Even if I'm going to be on a highway instead of the sea.

All My Bags Are Packed

I'm embarking on a whirlwind cruise with a dozen or so of my friends, so I'll be without computer and cell phone access* for almost a week, which would be daunting if I wasn't spending those days frolicking in the sunshine. I'm bringing as many books and magazines as bikinis, so I'm going to come back well-read, wonderfully-relaxed, and ready to tackle the last month of college.

Here's a peek inside my suitcase. I snapped this when my packing mantra was still "less is more." After uncovering so many of the summertime clothes that have been in the back of my closet for a few seasons, though, that mantra was quickly replaced with "When in doubt, bring it."

a. lots of bikinis: Who needs actual clothes when you're going to be in the sun for five days? The one I'm most excited to wear is my brand new Liberty of London for Target suit pictured here.
b. sun protection: my trusty Ray Bans with UV protection and sunscreen with an embarrassingly high spf. Even my mom said, "I don't think you need to buy one that strong."
c. seven days worth of magazines: ELLE, GQ, Glamour, and any other magazines I can get my hands on before departing at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.
d. fully charged iPod: with everything from Kid Cudi to Creedence Clearwater Revival, from Young Money to Mungo Jerry, from Broken Bells to the Beatles.
e. stack of books: Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. I'm also bringing Mrs. Dalloway and The Waste Land. Do I sound like a well-rounded college student, or what? I wish I could say I'm just really intellectual, but that would be a lie. It's for class.

*Be sure to visit throughout the week, because I have pre-scheduled posts about what I'm wearing (bikinis and dresses!), where I'm going (Key West and the Bahamas!), and how I'm spending my time (sunbathing and not doing my schoolwork!).

I Love College?

This is my life until I leave for my spring break trip Sunday morning: twinkle lights; too much hot tea; a tauntingly blank word document; and thick stacks of anthologies as I research and write a paper comparing and contrasting the literary allusions in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land.

I keep telling myself I'm going to miss college when it's over. At this moment, I'm not sure I believe it.

(By the way, you might be able to catch what I'm wearing in the reflection of my laptop. If you can't, it's a t-shirt and cut-off jean shorts, which is pretty much what I've had on the past 48 hours. Fashion blogger fail.)

Alexa Does Overalls, but Can I?

When Alexa Chung snagged the role of guest designer for an upcoming Madewell collection, I imagined choirs of fangirls, of which there are many, singing Arctic Monkeys at the top of their lungs in celebration. If we can't watch her on MTV, at least we can wear her clothes, right?

Although we'll have to wait until fall for Alexa-stamped peter pan collar tops and polka dot babydolls, I uncovered this five-years-old overall dress from the depths of my closet the last time I was home. Paired with a striped shirt, I feel very Alexa. The only difference? Alexa didn't grow up in a rural town where people wear overalls unironically; I did.

Can I pull it off?

A huge thank you to Ypulse.com for featuring me on an Author Q & A today! I've been reading their youth media newsletter every single day for the past six years (and even had the good fortune to write for them for a few of those years), and to be featured on their website is such an honor.

Ypulse: First off, congratulations on the book! Can you tell us a little about how the idea for a guide to dorm living and decorating came together?

Casey Lewis: Thank you so much! Last spring, I came across a fantastic dorm room in New York Magazine that I just loved, so naturally, I blogged about it. A few weeks later, I was contacted by a book publisher who came across my blog because of this tiny two-sentence post I had written about the dorm. She liked my writing style, and she asked if I would be interested in doing a proposal about having a great lifestyle while living in a dorm room.

I was finishing up final exams and getting ready to move to New York City for a summer internship, but I had a window of three or four days and typed up what I hoped was a book proposal. To my surprise, she loved it and my first week in the city I snagged the book deal. It made for an exhausting summer, interning until six or so and then writing until midnight, but it was an incredible experience.

Sequins Are A Girl's Best Friend

I spied this dress early this semester and immediately decided I needed it for graduation. The very same day that I was granted my mom's seal of style approval, it sadly sold out at Free People. They even tweeted me that they weren't expecting to get more in. (As much as I love new media, it sure doesn't help heal retail-related broken hearts.)

Magically, the dress reappeared online and, fatefully enough, the only one left happened to be my size.

It's very short, it's very sequined, and it came in right before my last sorority formal, so I decided to wear it instead of waiting another two months (and covering it up in a drab graduation gown). It was a good choice; wearing sequins makes dancing so much more fun.
